Cartooning with Ben Caldwell

Picked up Fantasy Cartooning by Ben Caldwell.  Been really enjoying his explanations as to WHY to draw things a certain way, not just how.  This is huge.  It's the difference between "start with an oval and add a jaw" and "Think about the character, and draw a head that suits based on that."  Plus he teaches you how to follow all the rules, and then how to break them as well. Below are some suggested exercises, straight from the book.

Hello sir. Not bad renditions of what I remember from Caldwell's book. The largest challenge I see in a lot of your pieces is line weight and line variety. This entails the thickness and value of the lines you render with and how they affect your work. Find some good drawing books and they're start to explain how line weight and variety can affect many things in a piece such as spatial distance, tactile texture, and depth. uniform lines everywhere will make a design look mushy and flat. Keep up the good work!
